Lead: Before he led the colony of Jamestown, Captain John Smith served in combat in Eastern Europe, was taken prisoner by Ottoman warriors, and later escaped that powerful 17th century dynasty.

Content: The powerful and wealthy Ottoman Empire John Smith knew ruled on three continents. Delegations from other Asia, Africa and Europe sought alliances and trade agreements to obtain exotic goods from the Ottomans. Curator Doctor Tom Davidson says England was profoundly influenced by the relationship.

So much so that in 1599, Queen Elizabeth sent the sultan a clock-organ to cement England’s trade relations with the Ottoman Empire.
