Hello and welcome to the ABC’s of Agriculture … I’m Professor Brad and today’s lesson is on K for Ketchup!
This is what we see today as ketchup… but, ketchup actually got its start in China as…. A spicy pickled fish brine…. Yuck! Lucky for us, some British sailors brought that recipe home and eventually tomatoes found their way into the blend.
And here’s your spelling lesson for the day…. How do you spell Ketchup? There are actually three ways to spell it. There is C-a-t-s-u-p or…. C-a-t-c-h-u-p…. or the dominant spelling of K-e-t-c-h-u-p.
Without a doubt, Ketchup is the most popular condiment in use in the United States….The recipe is pretty easy too…. Ketchup is … vinegar, sugar, salt, onion or garlic flavors and spices like cinnamon, cloves, mace , allspice, nutmeg, ginger, cayenne and cooked, strained tomato sauce.
In Virginia, tomatoes were among the 81 hundred tons of vegetables for procession that were harvested in 2000.
Ketchup can now come in any variety of colors from green and even… PURPLE? Ketchup! Just enjoy it… what ever color you prefer.
For the ABC’s of Agriculture… I’m Professor Brad… see you next time!
