Despite the opposition of Governor Letcher, the Virginia General Assembly called for a state convention to consider the issue of succession. Delegates to the convention were elected on February 4, 1861, the same day other southern states met in Montgomery, Alabama to form the Confederate States of America.

RECONFIGURING VIRGINIA explores the sectional crisis in Virginia from 1860-1861, and the splitting of the commonwealth into two states--Virginia and West Virginia--during the Civil War.
