Hello, and welcome to the ABC’s of Agriculture! Today we'll be talking about the letter U which stands for land-grant universities…
Virginia has two land-grant universities, the Virginia State University in Chesterfield County and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
There is at least one land-grant institution in each U.S. state and territory and in the District of Columbia.
Virginia Tech was founded as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1872. VSU was founded as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute in 1882.
Legislation passed in 1914 created Cooperative Extension associated with each land-grant institution. Extension provides information related to the university’s research to the public.
